Blue Monday’s been and gone – now cheer up on a spa break

Well that’s it then … I’ve just about survived another Blue Monday. For those who may have missed the newspaper reports, that was the day when we were all brought down to earth with a bump after a period of rampant celebrations.

The first Monday back at work for many people after the festive break spells utter gloom. It’s claimed to be the most depressing date on the calendar. Countless New Year resolutions have been broken already, more people complain about the weather – and it’s the most popular day of the year to begin divorce proceedings.

Whatever your state of cheeriness as we tackle the floods and gales and await the forecast Big Freeze, could it be time to escape for a self-indulgent, relaxing pampering break? There are bargains to be had at cosy country house hotels at this time of year and those with spas sound particularly appealing.

For example, Losehill House in the heart of the Derbyshire Peak District, currently has a Winter Spa package which saves 40% on normal prices. Room with breakfast, dinner, use of the spa and a 55-minute treatment now costs £125 per person per night sharing midweek (£50 Saturday night supplement).

More spectacular scenery is promised in the Lake District where the Wordsworth Hotel in Grasmere has savings of up to half price and £10 off any spa treatment. Prices start at £62.50 per person sharing per night midweek or on Sundays. This includes breakfast, a canapé reception and four-course dinner. The Sunday deal also includes a choice of bubbly in your room or full afternoon tea.

The Abbey Hotel in Bath offers the chance to bathe in the mineral-rich hot waters of Bath Thermae Spa on a two-night New Year Detox stay. Available until February 13, the break includes entry to the Roman Baths along with the two-hour spa session. Dinner one evening and breakfast each morning is also included in the price of £129 per person sharing.
