Get the New Year off to a fizzing start

Champagne corks will be popping at hotels throughout the land and many still have rooms available for sleeping off a hangover afterwards. Some even offer a discount if you move fast. 

For example, Appleby Manor Country House, on the edge of the Lake District, has a 20% saving on a two-night deal if you book before December 12. The new price of £240* includes dinner, bed and breakfast and a seven-course gala dinner with champagne reception and more bubbly at midnight. There is a New Year’s Day treasure hunt and afternoon tea.

After a two-hour New Year’s Eve cruise on Windermere, guests at Lakeside Hotel enjoy a gala dinner and clear their heads next day on a guided fell walk and exclusive visit to Lakeland Motor Museum. Two or three night stays are available costing from £499 and £699.

Another leading Lakeland country house hotel, the Wordsworth at Grasmere welcomes guests on December 30 with afternoon tea and at dinner a five-course tasting menu with accompanying fine wines. There is a gala dinner to celebrate 2014. Two nights is £475 and three  nights £575.

Colwall Park Hotel in the Malvern Hills recommends a revitalising New Year’s Day visit to Cheltenham or a quiet drive around the Wye Valley and Welsh Marches. The evening before features a six-course gourmet dinner rounded off with a champagne toast at midnight. Cost of two nights is from £300.

For those who can manage just the one night of celebrating, Grade I-listed Rushton Hall in Northamptonshire has a New Year’s Eve black-tie dinner followed by dancing with a swing singer and DJ in the grand Great Hall. The celebrations and overnight stay with breakfast costs £210.
